Asiatic Lion

The Asiatic Lion is a subspecies of the lion which survives only in the Gir Forest of Gujarat, India today, where it is also known as the Indian lion or Persian lion. In 2005, the Gujarat government reported 359 Asiatic lions being sighted in the Gir forest.
The Asiatic lions once lived in areas stretching from the Mediterranean to the north-eastern parts of the Indian subcontinent, however because of excessive hunting, water pollution and the decline in natural prey, the Lion's natural habitat has reduced. Asiatic lions are smaller and less agressive compaired to their African counterparts.
